What is Spatial Awareness? Fall Prevention & Stroke Recovery
Hello Friend,
Are you tripping on items on the ground or feeling unsafe walking?
I wanted to remind you about spatial awareness. Spatial awareness is one of our cognitive skills.
Spatial awareness is the ability to be conscious of oneself in space. It means being mindful of where your body is, how much room you have around you, and understanding the distance of objects in your surroundings.
For example: When you need to step over an item on the ground, your brain calculates how far your foot needs to lift and then how far to move the foot forward to clear the item before placing the foot back on the ground.
Often, when someone has a stroke, this is a challenge and this cognitive skill needs to be retrained. This does not only pertain to stroke survivors, but it also happens to many people for different reasons, including simply getting older.
I think of it like a muscle that needs to be exercised to stay strong and avoid becoming weak and failing the body.
My books, my courses, and my videos teach this and exercises that can be done safely for training.
I suggest strongly if this is a challenge for you now, if you are balance challenged, or learning to stand or walk again, to use a mounted bar on the wall.
A bar on the wall is essential for safety and to gain the maximum benefit when rebuilding spatial awareness.
