Smart Standing: From Sit to Stand

Smart Standing
Hello Friend,
Standing up from a chair seems simple — until it isn’t.
For many people, especially after stroke, injury, or as balance changes with age, sit-to-stand becomes one of the most important — and most overlooked — movements for safety, strength, and confidence.
That’s why today I want to talk about Smart Standing.
Smart Standing isn’t about forcing strength or “pushing through.”
It’s about understanding how your body works together — posture, core support, muscle activation, and stability — so standing up becomes safer, smoother, and more controlled.
Smart Standing is fall prevention.
In the video I’m sharing with you today, I walk you through:
• the key muscles involved in standing (including the core and psoas)
• why posture matters before you ever start to stand
• how proper chair height makes a huge difference
• how stability in sitting sets you up for success
• safe sit-to-stand mechanics, especially after stroke
• using wall bars or support surfaces for safety while practicing
For anyone rebuilding balance, walking, or confidence — sit-to-stand is foundational. It’s one of the most repeated movements we do every day, and when it’s done well, everything else improves.
This is especially important for people continuing recovery after physical therapy has ended. Progress doesn’t stop — it just needs the right guidance and safety strategies.
The newsletter shares some of the key ideas, but the video shows everything clearly — including illustrations, demonstrations, and practical setup tips you can use right away.
